Currently in school at Bowie State University, Counseling Psychology M.A, Projected Graduation December 2022

Accepting new clients.

Why work with a clinician in training?

What’s therapy with me like? I focus on all types of traumas, such as stress related disorders and neurodevelopment disorders (intellectual developmental disorder, Autism, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity disorder [ADHD], Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression, anxiety, conduct disorder, insomnia, and personality disorder, etc.).

Using an eclectic style of treatment with a heavy focus on an Adlerian model, I can assess early developmental periods to explore the here and now of clients’ current social behavior and the goal of belonging, while also addressing some of the maladaptive behaviors that cause social and emotional discomfort. For me, the Adlerian model and other modalities (Cognitive Behavioral therapy [CBT], mindfulness, person centered, and using art in therapy) stand out as evidence-based therapeutic practices with large bodies of support around trauma.

How I’ve kept learning… I am a graduate student in the counseling psychology program at Bowie State University (BSU), a former health care senior manager for 10 years, and have at least 10 years of working in the disability field as a direct support staff. I have a total of over 20 years serving people from diverse populations with developmental or intellectual disabilities and mental health disorders. My projected educational path is to pursue my Ph.D. in neuropsychology. I am a researcher for the Atikal Foundation, a nonprofit organization that celebrates survivors of domestic violence and cancer while bringing awareness to the mental health issues often precipitated by traumatic experiences. My life research focuses on traumatic stress and how generational trauma correlates with psychological development over the human lifespan, beginning with fetal development.

Who do I work with? I specialize in individual and group therapy with children 8-13, teens 13-18, and adults. I’m also happy to collaborate with families who are struggling with multiculturalism and culturally specific issues due to the transmission of multigenerational trauma.

My impacting identities are… I am an African American male and I have personal experience with stress related trauma that mentally and physically demobilized me for seven years. I was raised as a Southern Baptist; today my theology is more interfaith and accepting of all religious relationships.

I feel allied/aware/part of/informed/knowledgeable about… Social trauma and the psychological and physiological implications that can happen if left unchecked (knowledgeable about).

I am the best fit for a client who… is willing to commit and embrace how the historical self plays a part in the here and now of the current observable behaviors or issues presented. Someone who likes to have open conversations and creative, fun, interactive interventions towards long-term mental health.

I am not a good fit for a client who… holds prejudicial ideologies against people of color and all other oppressed groups.

What makes me unique? I believe that “The Creator” put me on this earth for one reason and one reason only: to serve others. Through that service, I can give back. I have also battled with depression, anxiety, and stress-related trauma as a child and an adult, so I can relate to the pain and discomfort that high levels of trauma can create. Through mindfulness training, cognitive restructuring, and addressing the historical self as it relates to the here and now, I can assist clients in building a strong foundation towards the feeling of belonging.
